How an E85 Station Comes to Life
January 21st, 2026
Expanding access to E85 requires careful planning, infrastructure investment and close coordination with station owners and regulatory agencies. Each new E85 station represents months of work designed to ensure more California drivers have access to a reliable, cost-saving fuel option for flex fuel vehicles.
New E85 locations are selected based on market need and opportunity. Stations that fill geographic gaps, expand access in underserved regions and demonstrate strong potential fuel volume are prioritized.
New projects may begin through direct outreach to or from station owners. In recent years, most new E85 opportunities have come from station owners reaching out directly, often through referrals from those who have enjoyed success from adding E85 at their own locations.
Once a site is identified, the team moves the project into business development, including project evaluation and formal agreements. Then, projects enter the permitting and construction phase. From initial planning to station launch, bringing an E85 station online generally takes anywhere from six to twelve months, with permitting alone often requiring a minimum of six months.
Infrastructure compatibility is a key consideration throughout the process. Stations must meet California regulatory standards, including the use of double wall fuel tanks that are compatible with E85. Teams coordinate tank conversions, equipment updates, and system checks to support safe and compliant E85 dispensing.
Station openings and beyond
After a station goes live, our support continues. Ongoing services include fuel supply management, consumer engagement and promotional support to help build customer awareness. Additional visibility through digital tools like the Pearson Fuels App helps connect drivers with E85 stations and encourage adoption of flex fuel.
By supporting station owners at every stage, Pearson Fuels continues to expand access to E85 across California to help drivers save money while strengthening the state’s renewable fuel infrastructure.
