Can You Convert Your Car to Run on E85?
July 25th, 2025
If you’ve heard about the cost savings, environmental benefits, and even the performance potential of E85 fuel, you might be wondering: Can I convert my car to run on E85?
The short answer: Yes — but not if you live in California…yet.
At Pearson Fuels, we’re all about helping drivers explore smarter, cleaner fuel options and offering drivers flexibility. Here’s what you need to know if you’re considering a conversion and why you can’t yet in California.
Converting a gasoline car to run on E85
Not all gas-powered vehicles are compatible with E85 fuel — but many can be converted using a flex fuel conversion kit.
These kits allow your engine to adjust to E85’s higher ethanol content by modifying the air-fuel mixture and ignition timing. The result? A vehicle that can safely and efficiently run on E85 — sometimes with added performance benefits.
What’s in a flex fuel conversion kit?
While exact components vary by vehicle, most kits include:
- Ethanol content sensor – Monitors how much ethanol is in the fuel.
- Control unit – Adjusts fuel delivery and ignition timing.
- Wiring harnesses and connectors – For clean, safe installation.
Engine compatibility and other parts
Your vehicle must have a fuel-injected gasoline engine. Diesel and carbureted engines aren’t compatible. Some high-performance engines may even benefit from E85’s higher octane.
If you’re driving a car built after the early 2000s, it likely already has ethanol-compatible lines and seals. Older models may require component upgrades to support the ethanol.
Installation
If you’re experienced with car modifications, installation might be DIY-friendly. There are Youtube videos that can help, but you can always go to a mechanic if you’re not sure how to install a kit on your own.
Why consider a conversion?
A proper E85 conversion can offer:
- Lower fuel costs
- Reduced emissions
- Higher octane for performance builds
- A cleaner alternative to traditional gasoline
- Flexibility to alternate between E85 and gasoline.
It’s not a one-size-fits-all solution, but converting to E85 could be a no-brainer. Adding E85 capability offers drivers the flexibility to choose which fuel to put in their tank, giving them options no matter where they’re driving.
Ready to get started?
So are we! But there’s a catch. California is unique in terms of alignment with the EPA. All 49 other states allow you to convert your vehicle to run on flex fuel. California’s own set of regulations are more stringent and burdensome than the EPA. EPA-certified kits still need to meet emissions standards, and manufacturers must prove that engine components are safe for ethanol. At Pearson Fuels, we are actively working to allow EPA’s rule to cover all 50 states.
Our goal is that sooner than later, whether you’re looking for a local installer, ordering a kit, or want to make sure E85 is available in your area — we’ve got the tools and support you need. Check out more on our website to learn more or explore our E85 station map.
